The short film was unsettling and creepy as it was giving it a back story and more detail made it feel cheapened. I feel like we see this a lot - capitalize off some popular internet thing that, when extended, loses some of what made it special in the first place. While I really loved the short film, I don't necessarily agree that it needed the full length treatment. I knew the lights off/lights on shadow figure thing seemed familiar. Despite the simplicity of its premise, Lights Out is excellent at building suspense and creating relentless sequences of tension as we watch these characters do whatever they can to outwit the supernatural being stalking them.It wasn't until I checked the credits that I realized this was based off of the short film by David F. It plays on the very simple premise of being scared of the dark-the “monster” in question only moves when the lights are out. Sometimes I am doubtful of PG-13 horror having the power to provide genuine scares, but Lights Out proves it is indeed possible. Unsurprisingly, a sequel is in development, though it’s unclear if it is still happening since there have been no updates on its status in more than five years. Lights Out made a significant profit, grossing over $148 million against a $4.9 million budget. What initially appeared to be a run-of-the-mill horror film was a surprising success thanks to excellent performances, great direction, and compelling cinematography. Based on Sandberg’s 2013 short film, Lights Out follows Teresa Palmer’s character Rebecca as she confronts childhood fears and strives to protect her brother (Gabriel Bateman) from a vengeful entity attached to her mother (Maria Bello). This 2016 supernatural horror film marked David F. Starring: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Billy Burke, and Maria Bello.Best horror movies on Netflix: Lights Out (2016)
